The 10k & S.P.E.W. (Society for Promotion of Elfish Welfare) Run

By Hogwarts Running Club

The Hogwarts Running Club (HRC) is proud to announce the 10K & S.P.E.W. virtual race. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Hermione Granger learns how the non-human species of House Elves are treated as slaves by the magical community, she founds the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare or S.P.E.W. to advocate for fairer treatment of elves. In the spirit of the advocacy and leadership shown by Hermione Granger throughout the Harry Potter series of books and movies, the Harry Potter Alliance founded the Granger Leadership Academy (GLA), an intensive leadership training event that is held annually. This year’s weekend-long GLA even will be held in St. Louis, Missouri from March 9th through the 12th. Since its inception two years ago, the Granger Leadership Academy has empowered 200 people, primarily young women, to become the socially-invested leaders of tomorrow through participation in discussions, lectures, and interactive workshops. Each attendee of the GLA has the opportunity to learn from leadership training sessions, keynote speeches, and special guest presentations that highlight how to use the lessons on social justice found in the Harry Potter stories to bring about real-world change. All funds raised from 10k & S.P.E.W. race registrations and t-shirt sales will be donated to the Harry Potter Alliance to fund the Granger Leadership Academy and other leadership development initiatives through the HPA's global Chapters Program. Each registration includes a customized full-color digital bib and a high quality 3” finisher’s medal on a full color 2” dye sublimated ribbon with velcro closure. The front of the 10k & S.P.E.W. medal features the wording “Proud Member of S.P.E.W” over an illustration of house elves Kreacher, Dobby, and Winky while the back features the Hermione Granger quote “I’m hoping to do some good in the world”.
